Background

I am a high school English teacher and the director of the Design Lab for Innovation in Teaching at an Apple Distinguished iPad Program School in California's Silicon Valley. I was named the Outstanding Young Educator of the Year for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in 2014, and am a Google Certified Innovator. I have a doctorate in education; my research interests rest at the intersection of literacy, technology, and multimedia design. In the summers, I teach courses on curriculum design for technology-rich spaces at the University of San Francisco, where I helped create the new Educational Technology Master's program.
Professionally, my great passion is finding new ways to engage students in meaningful learning. Teaching in a 1:1 environment has enabled me to increase engagement, enrich student learning experiences, more actively differentiate instruction, and personalize my approach to assessments and feedback. By using technology as a tool instead of focusing on apps and gadgets, I have found that my teaching has changed drastically. I firmly believe that a one-to- one environment can extend, enrich, and transform our best teaching practices. I share my enthusiasm for teaching with technology at educational conferences, and delight in learning from my colleagues around the country. I am a regular presenter at the ISTE and NCTE conferences, and consult for schools and districts to help facilitate their 1:1 programs. I am the co-author of Power Up: Making the Shift to 1:1 Teaching and Learning with Jen Roberts (@JenRoberts1), which was released by Stenhouse in June of 2015. When I'm not teaching, or writing about teaching, you'll find me out and about enjoying the beautiful California sunshine with my husband and son.
